The History

For some, it was an old, inconspicuous farmhouse on the outskirts of the city. For others, it was a hidden, historical property treasure right at the entrance to Osnabrück, waiting to be brought back to life. The latter include the entrepreneurial Barlag family.

The Vision

Around a whole year has passed since the beginning of 2020 in order to hold numerous discussions with the municipal authorities, structural engineers, experts, surveyors, energy consultants and, of course, the architect. At the beginning of the second quarter of 2021, the Osnabrück building authority received a fully developed building application, which marked the start of the more intensive phase of the ‘the Farmhouse № 50’ project.

The Challenge

Extensive refurbishment, renovation and modernisation work was about to be carried out in order to turn the courtyard, which had been neglected for decades, into a real gem, which is referred to in internal circles as the ‘Lobby of the City of Peace’.

The end of these measures marked the beginning of a new story about a time-honoured courtyard in the Hellern district, where the mayor at the time (note: Emil Grumke) ‘resided’.

Signet & designation

‘The house number meant well for us,’ says building owner Michael Barlag. "There's something special about this number. When two people have been married for 50 years, they celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Many friends are usually invited to a 50th birthday party. And when a company or an association turns 50, it's the first real anniversary. For us, there was no question of incorporating this house number into the name and logo of our idea."
